The Howland Daguerreotypes

  • Howland Stone Store Museum 2956 New York 34B Aurora, NY, 13026 United States (map)

In 2017, historians were startled by the discovery of a photograph of a young, stylishly dressed, Harriet Tubman. That photo was included in a one-of-a-kind album owned by reformer and Sherwood resident Emily Howland, and included students, abolitionists, fellow teachers, and public figures of the 1860s and 70s. The album is now on display at the African-American Museum in Washington, D.C.

On March 20, HSSM historian Larry Bell will unveil eleven amazing daguerreotypes from the HSSM collection that preceded the Howland photo album. These images, from the 1840s and 1850s, are also bi-racial, depicting Emily’s students, teachers, mentors, and family members. They are particularly illuminating when viewed next to the Emily Howland album. This presentation will be a preview of an upcoming exhibit at Opendore this spring.

Please email event@howlandstonestore.org to receive the Zoom link. This program can also be experienced in-person at Opendore. Seating will be limited to 20.
