The Harriet Tubman & Emily Howland Connection

The National Women’s Hall of Fame Interwoven Stories: The Harriet Tubman & Emily Howland Connection

In 2019, a photograph of a young Harriet Tubman was uncovered in a photo album originally owned by Emily Howland. During this panel discussion, originally aired in November 2021, experts from the National Portrait Gallery and Library of Congress explained the discovery, research, and preservation of the Tubman photograph, as well as discuss Tubman and Howland more broadly, and their relationship.

Panelists include: Moderator: Kim Sajet, Director, National Portrait Gallery; Ashleigh Coren, Women’s History Content and Interpretation Curator, National Portrait Gallery; Helena Zinkham, Director for Collections & Services and Chief of the Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress; Marilyn Post, Research Specialist, Howland Stone Store Museum.

This is a rebroadcast of the National Women’s Hall of Fame discussion. As part of this Zoom presentation, the Howland Stone Store Museum will hold a discussion following the program.

The Zoom link will be available the week before the program at howlandstonestore.org.
